I think your comment is spot on. If you've ever heard Bob Dole interviewed

or seen him in a somewhat relaxed environment he is actually quite engaging. I read one time that he was widely considered to have one of the best senses of humor in the Senate. I think the combative Dole came off is disingenuous or even unpleasant. Not that he was necessarily going to beat an incumbent Bill Clinton, but it would have been far preferable to see the real Dole.
